I’m always amazed at how young children learn to read and write! When this little gal was one and two we played with letters, their sounds, read little simple books, and memorized rhyming and pattern stories.
Instead of watching tv at three we read so many books, learned how to take picture walks, predict what would happen next, etc.
In JK we began to write stories. We came up with the character, Ice Cap, and together we wrote 4 short sentences that became the inspiration of my winter tale!
He had to have cool glasses, be on a snowboard and charge his cell phone in his magical hat. But even though he texted, Ice Cap spent most of his time playing games and connecting with friends without his phone!
At 5 my grandaughter continues to love to read and write. Today she was teaching us all how to sound out and write rhyming words. Kudos to her wonderful parents and teachers who have made reading and writing important activities for her! Screen time is fun and texting is useful but she learns best with real-life experiences!
So parents enjoy your early learners, read and write with them for real and pretty soon they too will be showing you how its done!!! Cheers!
